PHSE Polish Heritage Society of Edmonton

 

The Polish Heritage Society of Edmonton (PHSE) was incorporated as a not-for-profit society in Alberta in October 1993. Four not-for-profit Polish organizations in Edmonton are affiliated with PHSE, with each organization providing two appointees to the PHSE 11-person Board of Directors. The President, Vice President and Treasurer are elected for a 3-year term on the Board.

In 1996, PHSE purchased 3.63 acres of bare land from the City of Edmonton in central Edmonton.  The purchase was for the purpose of providing facilities for the Polish community of Edmonton, now numbering over 72,000 persons, and for the use of the Edmonton community at large.

 

In 1999 PHSE became a registered charitable society with four CRA approved objectives that form the society's mandate:

  1. To establish affordable housing, for senior citizens, which offer specialized services which assist senior citizens in their day-to-day activities and which generally provide a comfortable environment catering to the specialized needs of senior citizens;
  2. To provide a public amenity by establishing, administering and maintaining a multi-use recreational facility and museum to serve the Polish Canadian and public at large;
  3. To aid in advancing education by providing financial assistance to students enrolled in studies of Polish Canadian heritage, history, culture, and/or Polish language, at post-secondary institutions or other regular, formally organized classes;
  4. To purchase significant Polish Canadian cultural heritage/historical buildings with a view to protect and preserve them as well as educate the public.
